River Explorers Mobile App

Based in Lancashire, Ribble Rivers Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to improving the River Ribble and protecting its wildlife. The Trust works with the public to deliver river improvements throughout the Ribble catchment area.

Ribble Rivers Trust came to us wanting to increase engagement from the local community by developing an augmented reality app. Their primary objective was to encourage children, parents, and members of the local community to visit pre-defined walks along the River Ribble.

What we delivered…

We developed The River Explorers app as an AR experience deployed through mobiles and tablets. The app was designed as a trail along the River Ribble which encourages users to locate specially designed markers which, when scanned, triggered computer-generated 3D animals to appear.

As the river is home to a variety of wildlife, each animation features a different animal and a description of it. Users are tasked with finding all the markers and have the opportunity to take photos alongside the animals which they can share online with family and friends.

The results

River Explorers app allows children aged 4+ and adults visiting the River Ribble to explore the world around them in a more interactive way. It provides an engaging, educational experience for people to learn more about the different species that call the river home.
